Waldkirchen is one of the easternmost cities in Bavaria. The city lies between the three-river city of Passau and the Bavarian Forest National Park.

• In September 1973, the groundbreaking ceremony for the first public golf course in the Federal Republic took place in Waldkirchen-Dorn. In the fall of 1975, the 9-hole course with an area of ​​over 25 hectares, located approximately 3 kilometers east of Waldkirchen, was opened. In 1997 and 1998 the course was expanded to include the 18-hole tournament facility in Poppenreut according to the plans of the architect Keith Preston, so that there is now a facility covering around 90 hectares.
